How to hang a 6ft punching bag outdoors?

Hi, I'm wanting to hang a 6ft, 40kg punching back in my verandah. It is slightly sloping and I'm concerned it's not in best shape. I can see this question has been asked before but I was hoping to get advice with my verandah in mind.

Can these ceiling joists support the weight of the punching bag? If so, will it need to be reinforced? I had a look at the below discussion which is very similar to my situation and suggests that adding a timber in between the joists for the bag to hang from is ideal.

Unfortunately, your verandah ceiling was never designed to support the weight of a 6 ft, 40 kg punching bag. The joists are sized only to carry the roof sheeting above. From your image, the timbers are lightweight (around 90–100 mm x 45 mm), which is significantly undersized for this kind of load. Even if you added reinforcements, the current structure cannot safely support a hanging bag without a major rebuild.

For context, joists of 140 mm x 45 mm or larger might allow you to entertain the idea, but your existing roof framing would essentially need to be completely reconstructed to handle the load safely. Hanging a heavy bag from a standard verandah ceiling is therefore not recommended. In the other discussion, their roof is constructed with larger timbers, and even then, it's questionable as to whether a load should be added.

Safer alternatives include:

• Freestanding punching bag stands: These are designed to handle the weight and impact safely.
• Outdoor frames or brackets fixed to solid posts or walls specifically rated for punching bags.

This way, you can train without risking structural damage or injury.
