I'm wanting to make these steps more user friendly. Is it possible to cover existing bricks with decking and extend it out beneath the window? Or would I need to completely rip it up and start from scratch?
Thank you!
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @mdeyoung. It's sensational to have you join us and many thanks for your question on extending stairs.
Would you be able to tell our helpful members a little more about the issue you're hoping to solve by extending the steps? For example, are you finding them too narrow, too steep, or just wanting a larger landing area outside the door?
The steps could certainly be extended, but I’m just trying to understand what the goal is, particularly if the extension would run out in front of the window. Knowing a bit more about how you’d like the space to function will help us provide more practical suggestions.
Once we have a bit more detail about what you’re hoping to achieve, our members will be able to offer some more informed advice on whether covering the bricks with decking could work or if another approach might be better.
Looking forward to hearing a bit more about the project.

Hi Mitchell
Thanks for the quick reply! Currently the stairs are too narrow and it's difficult to climb the stairs and then have to open the flyscreen outwards. You need to take a step back down to get through the door. Having the entrance extended to under the window would make it safer to enter the house from more of an angle instead of straight on
Hello @mdeyoung
Thank you for the added information and clarification. I propose adding a timber landing in front of your door with the steps placed further along so that you have room to swing the flyscreen door without having to step back. Yes, you can have it built near the window or on an angle. Before you begin, I suggest checking your local council's rules and regulations regarding building landing and steps in front of your door. Because the landing will be attached to the house a building permit may be necessary.
If the council requires official plans, it will be necessary to engage the services of a draftsperson. They will be familiar with the rules and regulations of the local council. Once the drawing has been approved you can then commence with having the landing built.
I've placed a sample image below rendered in AI, I understand you don't want it head on in front of the door, I'm just showing you an example of what it can look like.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
