What's the best way to get ride of a wasp nest just starting on my aircon unit? Without damaging the condenser or me ;)
Hi @Nickim1,
The safest way to deal with a wasp nest on an aircon condenser, especially if it’s up high, is to wait until the evening, around 9pm or after dark. By that time, all the wasps have usually returned to the nest and are far less active, which makes treatment much safer and more effective.
Use a dedicated wasp spray that has a long-range jet (many will spray several metres), such as PestXpert 400g Wasp Jet Long Reach Spray. The long throw allows you to stand well back from the unit so you’re less likely to get stung. Aim directly at the nest and give it a thorough spray. Most quality wasp sprays will knock them down instantaneously.
Leave it for at least 20 minutes to ensure activity has completely stopped. After that, I’d recommend using your hose on a firm stream setting to wash the nest and any residual chemical off the condenser. This helps prevent any residue from sitting on the metal fins or casing longer than necessary.
In most cases, the nest will break apart and fall away on its own. If there’s a bit of debris left behind, you can remove it later with a long broom or brush once you’re confident there’s no remaining activity.
If you’re at all unsure, it’s always best to call a licensed pest controller. Safety first.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
