How to repair concrete driveway edging?

My driveway edging was formed through a continuous casting some 25 years ago. The edging boarders the aggregate driveway and the grassed area next to the driveway. Over the past years, the concrete edging has started to break away (see images).

My goal is to clean, patch and paint the edging to restore the finish. I wanted guidance on the best products available to patch the concrete, and any preparation or processes that would improve the repair and its longevity.

Because this is concrete, an expanding cement repair product like Earl's 1kg Concremate Expanding Cement is a great option for patching those cracks and broken sections. Expanding cement is ideal for repairing voids and cracks in concrete as it locks firmly into the surrounding surface. It also sets very hard, so it’s important not to over-apply it and to finish it neatly so it blends with the adjacent areas. Don't be concerned about the "expanding" part, it doesn't actually expand, it just doesn't shrink whilst cured, which other fillers can do.

Preparation is key to getting a long-lasting repair. Start by removing all loose or crumbling concrete, then thoroughly brush out the area to clear away dust and debris. The surface should be clean and sound before patching. Lightly dampen the concrete (without leaving standing water) just before applying the repair mortar. This helps improve adhesion and prevents the existing concrete from drawing moisture out of the patch too quickly.

Mix the expanding cement as per the instructions and press it firmly into the cracks and voids. For deeper sections, it’s best to build it up in layers rather than trying to fill everything at once. You can always apply a thin skim coat over the top afterwards, to refine the finish. Use a trowel to smooth and shape the repair so it blends into the existing edging. Keep in mind that expanding cement sets fairly quickly, so only mix small amounts at a time.

Once fully cured, you can lightly sand or tidy any high spots if needed before priming and painting the edging. Proper prep and careful application will make a big difference to how well the repair holds up over time.
