How to fix damaged timber bed frame?

Hi All,

Assisting a friend to fix a bed frame tomorrow, where the original bolt that goes through has effectively ripped away and is unusable. While I'm happy to attempt to drill a new bolt hole through directly, I suspect that the condition of the side piece is going to mean that will be hard to do or unsuccessful.

My thoughts are (given the post is fairly narrow - and so not enough space to put something like the Hafele Bed Bracket in to replace it is):

* Fit to the bottom an angle bracket like this for overall strength, to help[ take the load (i.e. screwed into the bottom of the side piece and then into the post): https://www.bunnings.com.au/carinya-175-x-150mm-black-angle-bracket_p3961578
* Add on the inside of it a bracket to keep it from moving/twisting side to side - could something as simple as this work, secured with a short Coach Screw into the Post, and whatever short screw I can find to go into the side piece: https://www.bunnings.com.au/carinya-30-x-30-x-30-x-3-5mm-stainless-steel-reinforcing-angle-bracket_p3962472

This was only initial thinking, so I'm very happy for a completely different approach if people have better ideas of course :)

I think the simplest solution here is not to overthink it. In situations like this, where the original bolt fixing has torn out, I’ve had good success just pulling the bed away from the wall, pre-drilling, and then screwing straight through the face of the bed leg into the end of the side rail using three long timber screws (top, middle and bottom).

Even though there’s a chunk missing from the rail, there appears to still be enough solid timber left to get a strong bite with decent timber screws. They will comfortably carry the load of a standard bed if pre-drilled properly to prevent splitting. This method alone is often more than strong enough and is a common fix when original bed fittings fail.

If you’d like to reinforce it further, adding a small angle bracket underneath the rail where it meets the leg is a good idea. It doesn’t need to be as large as the 175 x 150mm bracket you've linked, just something around 50 x 50mm positioned directly under the joint will help support the downward load. The rail itself supports the span; you’re really just reinforcing the connection point.

I don’t think you’ll need the second internal bracket to prevent twisting. The screws driven through the leg into the end of the rail, combined with a bracket underneath, will already stop movement and rotation. Also, space might be tight inside the joint, depending on the width of the leg and thickness of the rail, which could make fitting that secondary bracket tricky.

So my approach would be:

* Pull the bed out for access.
* Pre-drill and drive three timber screws through the leg into the end of the rail.
* Add a small angle bracket underneath the joint for additional support.

That combination should give you a strong and tidy repair.
