Hello,
I need to extend the blue drainage down pipe to be the same size as the cream one in the background. Do I have to buy a whole new pipe or is there a way to extend it?
cheers
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @dane. It's a pleasure to have you join us and many thanks for your question on downpipe.
No, you don’t necessarily have to replace the entire downpipe and it is possible to extend the existing one. That said, you may find that Colorbond downpipes are only available in standard 1.8-metre lengths rather than short 1-metre sections. If that’s the case, it can sometimes make more sense (and look neater) to just replace the full length instead of joining a short extension onto the bottom.
If extending it, the usual method is to cut the existing downpipe neatly, crimp the end slightly so it reduces in size, and then slot it into the top of the new section. The join is then secured with rivets or screws. This allows the water to flow correctly without leaking at the joint.
It’s important to mention that altering downpipes is considered roof drainage work, so it should be carried out by a licensed plumber or roof drainage specialist to ensure it’s compliant and properly connected.
Also, while you’re looking at this, it would be worth considering whether that blue downpipe could be connected into the stormwater system, similar to the cream one in the background, rather than discharging directly onto the ground. Letting water pool around the base of the home isn’t ideal long-term and can contribute to moisture or foundation issues. Connecting it to stormwater is always the better solution if possible.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
Thank you for the reply Mitchell, sounds like it will just be easier to replace the whole down pipe. But the blue downpipe is a little higher than the roof as it’s connected to my patio. Would I be better getting a custom made longer downpipe or do you think the average 1.8m one would do the job? regarding the bottom I will be installing a Soakwell.
Thanks
That depends on whether the 1.8m length is long enough @dane. What's the length from the gutter to the ground? I suspect a 1.8m length would not be much longer than the existing section, and you'd need to order the next size up, which will probably be 2.4m.
