How to build a deck elevated 600mm?

Question

Hi there.

Wanting to attempt a project whilst my husband is away. And wanted some advice.

Have been thinking I will use tuff blocks for the piering (90x90)to elevate the frame - but wonder how I would go about fixing this frame onto the uprights? So I need to cut out the timber or can use hangers or something to affix them.

I am a beginner and will watch the building a deck - but really just wonder about the frame affixed to the upright posts.

And how many piers should it be recommended for a 3.6m X 7m ?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your decking project.

Building a deck is a wonderful and challenging project. If this is your first decking project, I suggest checking out the rules and regulations of your local council in regards to building a deck. Because your deck is larger than 10sqm a permit may be necessary along with a certified plan drawn by a draftsperson or engineer.

In regards to your question about fixing the frame to the uprights, cutting into the posts to create a seat for the frame is ideal as it transfers the weight of the frame onto the post and not just fixing bolts. I propose having a quick look at these guides - How to build a low-level deck by @Adam_W and How to build a deck by @MitchellMc. These guides will give you a general idea of how to draw your decking frame. I also suggest having a look at this featured project - Low-level composite deck over concrete and soil by @oninpena. It's an excellent example of a single layer decking frame.

Once you've read the guides, I suggest drawing your decking frame on paper. Share your plan with the community along with any questions you might have about your plan. I don't wish to overload you with information so it's best to start with the links I've provided above. I also suggest checking out the other decking projects by typing "low-level deck" in the search bar at the top.

As to the number of piers/footings you'll need for your deck, the answer will depend on how you design your decking frame. My best advice is to gather as much information as you can and then draw your decking plan before you start purchasing any materials.
