we removed an air-conditioning unit. Can you please tell me how to repair the hole in the wall and also on the outside it’s a rendered wall.
Hi @suzmyster,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
The best way to repair a hole left from an air conditioning unit in a rendered brick wall is to rebuild the section of brickwork first and then restore the finishes on both sides of the wall.
The first step is to install a brick back into the opening. Start by cleaning out the hole and removing any loose debris so the mortar can bond properly. If you need to cut the brick, you can do so by scoring it with a brick bolster and hammer then striking it along the score line. Apply mortar around the edges of the opening using a brick trowel and bed your brick into place so it sits flush with the surrounding brickwork, ensuring you leave space on each side for the render and plaster. Make sure the brick is fully supported with mortar on all sides and pack any remaining gaps so the wall is sealed and structurally sound. Allow the mortar time to set before moving on to the next step.
Once the brick has set, the outside of the wall can be re rendered. Apply a render mix over the new brick and blend it into the existing rendered surface around it. Try to match the thickness and texture of the surrounding render so the repair is less noticeable. After the render cures, it can be painted to match the rest of the exterior wall using a suitable exterior paint. Check out How To Render for some guidance on the process.
Finally, repair the inside of the wall using Gyprock Hardwall Plaster which is designed for direct application over masonry surfaces. It should be mixed with builder's lime and then applied to the wall using a trowel. Allow it to dry, give it a sand and then paint to match.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
