How to reattach air con vent?

Hi Everyone! I am starting work on a room, giving it a clean and paint when I noticed one of my Air Con Vents in the room has slightly detatched from the ceiling on one side (the other side is fine). I was thinking about reattaching it and wanted to check the best way for doing it. I was thinking of something like liquid nails to get it stuck back flush with the ceiling and a gap filler of some sort to finish and make it seamless. Is this the right way, or is there a better way? Thanks!

Hi @bendr,

Your air con vent, which would be similar to this Bradford CSR 300mm Round Ceiling Grille Vent or this Haron 340mm Round Ceiling Vent, is almost certainly held in place by spring loaded clips which pull against the back of the plasterboard.

If your vent is like this one, then it looks like one or two of them are not currently sitting as they should above the ceiling plasterboard. You may be able to simply push the vent up so these spring-loaded clips seat the vent against the ceiling as intended. If the plasterboard is damaged in the location of the clips, then it may just require a slight rotation of around 5 degrees.

If this does not work, you could certainly use a construction adhesive such as Liquid Nails to stick the vent to the plasterboard and then seal the seam with some No More Gaps, but if the vent ever needs to come out for service, this will damage the plasterboard around it.

If your vent is not functioning as intended, it may be worth considering replacing the vent as gluing the existing one in place can cause further issues down the line.
