How to fix retic system air release?

Hi, I recently had someone install a reticulation system in my backyard, connected to a 1hp bore pump. When I turn the irrigation on, this happens (see pictures). Water shoots our for like a second or two.
I did a bit of research and found that this is the highest point in the system (the pipe sticking up in the air), which was probably installed to release air?

However the pvc pipe seems to be just open, there’s no valve or anything and every time I turn the retic on a bit of water shoots out.
Is there supposed to be an air release valve on that pipe? Thanks in advance.

It looks like that vertical pipe has been installed at the highest point of your irrigation system to help manage air in the line, which is a common and sensible approach. When the pump starts, it pushes both water and any trapped air through the system, and that short burst you’re seeing is the air being expelled along with a small amount of water. This is typical behaviour during startup, especially with a bore pump.

To refine the setup and prevent the water from spraying out, that riser can be fitted with a device that allows air to escape while sealing once water reaches it. A simple and effective solution is to install an automatic air release valve on top of the pipe. An example is the Holman Poly Irrigation Air Release Inline Valve (please speak to your installer for compatibility). This type of valve will let air out as the system pressurises and then close automatically, which keeps everything tidy and prevents ongoing water loss. Another option is to fit a cap or small valve to the top, which will stop the spray and still allow you to manually release air if needed from time to time.

As the system has only recently been installed, it would typically still be covered under the installer’s warranty. With that in mind, it may be best to contact the installer and request that they complete the setup by fitting the appropriate air release valve. This approach helps ensure the system remains compliant with their workmanship standards, and avoids any risk that making changes yourself could affect the warranty or potentially cause unintended issues within the reticulation system.

Given you’re running a 1 hp bore pump, it’s also worth ensuring the pipe and fittings at that point are secure and rated for pressure, as that location can experience a quick surge when the system turns on. With a small adjustment like adding an air release valve, the system should operate cleanly and reliably without that initial burst of water.
