How to lay pavers over existing concrete path?

Hi all,

I am planning to lay pavers over existing outdoor exposed aggregate concrete path (The area is exposed to elements everyday). I might need to lift the pavers in the future so not going to spread tile adhesive/mortar directly on the concrete path.

What is the proper approach in my case here to install pavers? Can a heavy duty plastic sheet be laid over the existing concrete path and then glue pavers on the sheet?

As you’ve mentioned @CarlL, pavers are typically either fixed down with an adhesive or bedded into a mortar or sand base, depending on the application.

Using a plastic sheet underneath isn’t something I’d recommend as tile adhesive generally won’t bond properly to plastic, so you’d likely run into issues with movement or failure over time.

If you’re looking for something removable, one option could be to use a cement sheet over the concrete as a bonding surface.

A simpler approach might be to lay the pavers directly over the existing concrete (either dry-laid or with a thin sand bed), and then install garden edging or sleepers along both sides of the path. That way, the edging helps keep everything in place and prevents the pavers from shifting, while still allowing you to lift them in the future if needed.

Just make sure the existing concrete is level and has good drainage so water doesn’t get trapped underneath.
