How to re-assemble Shaw and Mason top assembly?

I would like to know how to re assemble this tap in order to prevent the top brass nut coming off the end. The correct splined adaptor is on the spindle at the moment. Is there an assembly diagram or photo showing the correct way because I cannot see any diagram on Bunnings website, or on Shaw and Mason website. Product number fineline is 0595305.

Is Loctite 243 going to keep it assembled?

The assembly instructions are shown in the third picture on the Shaw & Mason Chrome Wall Top Assembly product page.

I said not to use the Loctite thinking that you were using the incorrect tap. Now knowing my observation was incorrect, if you follow the above instructions and are still having issues, then you should be fine to use the blue Loctite 243, as the nut can still be removed with standard hand tools. Just don't use a higher-grade red Loctite which are designed to make the nut irremovable.

The reason you are having issues is because you have a wall top assembly, which is designed to be attached to pipes coming from a wall, when you need a basin top assembly.

The main difference between the two is the large spring, which in a wall mounted application pushes the rubber washer inside the tap firmly against the seat so water can seal off properly. If it is used on a basin, the spring will push against the top of the basin, forcing the tap handle upwards, which is why you can't get the nut to stay in place.

A basin tap is mounted differently, so it doesn't require that spring applying pressure to it, which is almost certainly why the nut is popping off.

I would not suggest you use Loctite 243, instead I'd suggest you return your tap assembly with your receipt and swap it for a Shaw & Mason Chrome Classic Style Basin Top Assembly which should simply attach in the way described in the instructions.

Hi JacobZ. I have a wall top assembly because the tap is mounted on the wall, not sink mounted. Why wouldn't you use loctite to secure the holding nut, and are there any instructions available on line, either on Bunnings or Shaw and Mason website?

Just to add to the suggestions made by Jacob, I recommend following the drawing assembly sequence shown on the instruction sheet.

Install the red fibre washer to the bottom of the spindle body and make sure that the jumper valve is securely seated before you screw the entire spindle body in place.
The wall flange and spring are the next ones to go on.
Insert the spindle adapter into the handle and place the handle over the spring and slot it into the spindle top. You'll need to keep pressing on the handle as the spring will be pushing on it.
Apply the Loctite before you screw the locking nut in place. (follow application instructions for Loctite printed on bottle)
Put in the indicator and handle cap.

In the image below you'll see a plastic tool between the springs. This is a special tool that lets you tighten the locking nut inside the handle. My best advice is to keep this tool in one of your vanity drawers. Should the brass nut come loose you'll have the tool within easy reach. I suggest tightening the brass locking nut firmly but not overly tight to prevent cracking the plastic.
