How to grow dragonfruit and build trellis?

Question

Hi guys, I've just been given some cuttings of dragonfruit and would like to grow them in my garden. I've seen online that a trelis system is usually recommended. How would I go about making one, and would bunnings have the materials to make it?

Here are other products and discussions that provide a possible growing frame for plants:

* D.I.Y. Vertical Vegetable Planter (the other plants will need to be removed, and the entire structure will be dedicated to the dragon fruit)

* Holman GreenWall Mobile Garden Kit (the pots at the top will need to be replaced with a steel mesh trellis)

The dragon fruit tree will be growing to a considerable size, I propose thinking about how large a planting pot you'll be using along with the trellis attached.

I'm planning on having it in a pot. So I can have the flexibility of moving it around if needed.

You’re right that a trellis or some form of support is definitely recommended. Dragon fruit is a climbing cactus, so it naturally wants to grow upwards and then trail over. Giving it support helps keep the plant off the ground, improves airflow, and encourages better flowering and fruiting as it matures.

In the wild, dragon fruit grows by climbing up trees or other structures, using aerial roots to anchor itself as it goes. Once it reaches the top, it spreads and hangs down, which is when it typically starts to flower and set fruit. A trellis or support in the garden is essentially mimicking this natural growth habit.

Creating a support structure is relatively easy, however the best approach would come down to the specific circumstance. Things like garden arches and plant trainers are good in freestanding areas, whereas things like timber lattice or this Rapid 1250 x 1810mm Living Wall System would be good if there is a support structure such as a fence or some post to attach it to.
