How to fill exposed metal corner bead?

Hello, I’m trying to fill these exposed areas. I’ve got some joint compound and tried to fill it but it does not stick that well. It’s also curved and not a 90 degree angle, so whenever I try to shape it with a knife I just end up removing what I put on. Thanks!

In order for your filler to anchor onto the surface, I suggest sanding the corner very well with a 180 to 240grit sandpaper. It needs to be very clean and free of oil and grease deposits that may have settled on the surface of the metal corner. Once you have sanded the corner very well, I suggest wiping the surface with https://www.bunnings.com.au/selleys-sugar-soap-wall-cleaning-wipes-25-pack_p1210330 until all the sanding dust is gone. I also recommend using https://www.bunnings.com.au/uni-pro-500g-multi-purpose-interior-filler-500g_p1210281 .

I propose building the filler like a mound and not applying too much on the surface. Allow the filler to fully cure before applying another level. Sand the surface lightly and do not apply too much force to prevent ripping the patch off. Once the filler cures and has been sanded down you can then proceed to paint the corner.

I would echo @EricL 's suggested way of plastering. Slow and steady is the winner here. When I was trying to fill the join between two pieces of plaster I can remember pulling my hair out as it just didnt wirk. Had a mate come over and show me and I stood there staring as he did what I was doing but more so. Slowly build up the area, let it cure (if its humid or raining let it doubly cure) then add a bit more. Its easy enough to sand off. Do the sanding by hand as its less intense. And I have to say it… Wax on, wax off :) It really works the arm muscels but you will love the effort you have put into it when its done.

Proper preparation is always the key with any repair work. Following along the lines of what @EricL has suggested, I would start with 120g sandpaper first over more finishing grits as your only going to cover it over with the filler. Run the paper along the areas of the corner where both there are multilevels of uneven surfaces and into the exposed. Now use the sugar soap wipes over the work area and allow to dry. This preparation process will both clean out any greasy deposits he mentioned and provide a gritty surface for filler to better adhere to.

When applying the filler, apply a little more than the finish surface level over the corners and both sides. This is important to provide increased strength where the chips are. The chip/s are shallow so you can apply this in a single level and I would allow a minimum of 1hr (filler states 30min) to harden. Now you can lightly use the 180g paper on a cork block to take the filler back to almost to wall level and finish with the 240g.

Prime coat all areas of repair. I like to use this stain-blocker primer from Zinsser as it can also be used for prime coating more stain effected areas more effectively than standard primers. Now apply 2-coats of your wall colour paint. Let us know how you go.

Thanks @EricL @Dave-1 @Nailbag, I was able to get a much better finish with your advice. Sanded and cleaned first, then filled and sanded twice. Might do a third layer to fill the tiny low spots. Perhaps I didn't fill high enough or sanded off too much. Will primer and topcoat fill these spots?

I vote doing a third layer in order to fill in leftover tiny spots, you'll then end up with a nice flat finish once you prime and paint the surface.
