How to re-stain timber front door?

Hi Gang.

Hoping to get some advice about re-sealing the front door to my house.

It's a Corinthian Blonde Oak AWO WS 19H front entrance door with a clear seal. Was installed just over two years ago. Unfortunately, they didn't do a good job with the seal. On top of that, the door faces Northeast (so gets blasted by full sun, especially during summer) and also gets wet when it rains (especially with the wild horizontal rain we've been getting recently in the storms).

I'm keen to re-seal it. Was going to start by lightly sanding it using 120 → 180 → 240 grit (random orbital sander + hand for the ridges), then coating it with something like Cabot's 1L Satin Water Based Exterior Clear. I'm leaning towards the water-based product since the oil-based ones tend to yellow when exposed to sun, and I really want to preserve the blonde oak look as much as possible. Am thinking 2-3 coats with light (240 grit) sanding in between.

Once it's all done I'm planning to install a Raven RP3 Door Bottom CA 1220mm to help with insulation.

Any thoughts / feedback / advice on this approach?

That’s pretty much exactly how I’d recommend tackling it @SyedAhmed.

Your sanding sequence, sticking with a water-based clear like Cabot's, and doing 2–3 coats with light sanding between is spot on, especially if you want to keep that blonde oak look without yellowing.

The only real issue here is the exposure. Northeast-facing + full sun + wind-driven rain is just brutal on any clear finish, no matter how well it’s applied. Even a perfect job will wear faster in that setup.

A couple small tips to get the most out of it:

* Make sure you really remove the old failed coating as any weak spots will just fail again.
* Go a bit heavier on the top and bottom edges of the door (they’re common failure points).
* Keep up maintenance. A light recoat before it fully breaks down will save you a full sand-back later.

Honestly, though, you’re already doing about as much as you can finish-wise. The only real upgrade from here is protection. Something like an awning, porch canopy, or even a deeper eave. That’ll extend the life of the coating massively.
