Does a kitchen benchtop need to overhang the cabinetry?

I got a new kitchen benchtop that would just fit over cabinet only in one section ( bench top width 600, cabinet width 585 as shown in pictures). The other sections are fine as they have a better overhang

. Would that be sufficient? am I overlooking anything regarding the installation. What are the pros and cons of having a bench top that just fits over the cabinets.

The main reason for having an overhang on a benchtop is to help manage spills and drips. When there’s a small lip, liquids tend to fall off the edge instead of running back underneath toward the cabinets. If it’s almost flush, there’s a higher chance of spills tracking back along the underside and into the cabinet faces or panels over time, which can lead to swelling or damage, especially with moisture sensitive materials.

On the plus side, a minimal overhang can give a really clean, modern look, and in tight spaces it can help with clearances. It’s not "wrong”, it just needs a bit more care in use.

If you’re going ahead with it, just make sure the benchtop is well sealed using a suitable option from our https://www.bunnings.com.au/products/building-hardware/building-construction/gap-fillers/silicone-sealants range along the seam between the benchtop and the cabinet.
