How to repair lifted plasterboard in bathroom corner?

Hi,

I’m wanting to paint my bathroom but have some crackers along one corner going up the wall – I think it seems to be a crack along the edge of some sort of previous tape along the corner perhaps? I am wondering how best to prepare this corner for my paint work

For reference we recently purchased this property and I have absolutely no clue what has been done previously. I’m happy with making this crack “good enough” to be a base for the paint, there’s a solid chance we may knock down the house in a couple years and I just want some colour in my life until then.

What you’re seeing there is the old tape and plaster lifting, so the best approach is to remove anything that’s loose rather than trying to patch over the top of it.

You’ll need to cut out all the loose and deformed plaster and tape, even if that means making the damaged area a bit bigger. It might feel counterintuitive, but you want to get back to something solid. Anything left loose will just keep cracking under your paint.

Once you’ve cleaned it back:

• Fill the area with a patching compound like Spakfilla
• Let it dry, then sand it back flush
• Repeat the fill and sand process as needed until it’s smooth and blends in

After that, apply a primer over the repaired area, then go ahead with your paint.

Given your situation, this will give you a nice clean finish without going overboard, and should hold up well until you decide on any bigger renovations
