Hello
I’d like to frame out this wall to hide the exposed weight bearing metal posts. Is it ok to screw the timber framing directly to the metal posts?
Thanks
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @stephaniebinder. It's wonderful to have you join us and many thanks for your question on timber framing.
If you’re looking to frame out a full wall in front of those steel posts, the key point is that your new stud wall should be independently supported, not relying on the steel posts for structure.
A typical approach is to build your stud wall fixed to the concrete slab below and the structural framing above (ceiling/joists). That way, the wall is fully self-supporting. You can then tie the studs back to the steel posts lightly (for alignment and stability) using appropriate fixings, but the posts shouldn’t be carrying or supporting your new wall.
Because those steel posts are load-bearing, you’ll want to avoid anything that could compromise them, like excessive drilling or larger penetrations. Keep any connections minimal and only for restraint, not structural support.
Before proceeding, it’s a good idea to have a qualified builder or structural engineer confirm the setup, especially since you’re working around structural elements.
Here's a helpful step-by-step guide: How to build a stud wall.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
