The project:
Converted my old Black and Decker workmate 600 to a mobile workbench. Used space below the worktop for cabinet with drawers which contains hardware and hand tools. Power board allows for the use of a variety of power tools. The workmate sits on a tray fitted with lockable castors. It all strips down to store in the back of my car if need to work at my family’s house.
I needed to make a mobile workbench as the having moved from a house with an 8x4 metre shed to a lifestyle village with a shed 3 x 2 meter shed there is little room for a normal workbench plus storage of tools etc. This meets my needs.
- Materials:
3mm leftover mdf parts from sheets purchased from Bunnings I laminated to make a thickness of 12mm then cut to fit space below the top. The workmate was a gift bought at Bunnings some twenty odd years ago and is due for restoration.
- Tools:
All the tools ie AEG power saw and sander, glue, screws and lockable castors purchased from Bunnings Joondalup.
- Step 1:
Made a box with the laminated mdf to fit below the work surface of the workmate.
Made 3 drawers to fit inside the box.
Made a bigger top for the workmate.
Made a tray with lockable wheels for the workmate to site inside the tray
The whole unit sits on the support frames of the workmate thus if I had to take to work site, all I do is slide the drawer cabinet out from the workmate remove the large work top, fold up the workmate and store the in the car boot.
