How to make a corner bench? Can I do a hanging seat?

Hi all. We have a corner area which I really would like to put in a corner seating Just from the corner up until after the next post. My brain is not working on how to to the corner bit. I was planning on doing a hanging bench but bracing it from underneath ofcourse. Any advice or inspo is much appreciated. :)

Thanks for this. I was thinking of like a triangular-cut corner where the seats meet but I love this idea, much better and easier! Now I just need to get my measurements right. lol

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Isla. It's wonderful to have you join us and many thanks for your question on creating a bench seat.

You’ve got a couple of solid ways to tackle this depending on the look you’re going for.

For a more simple, floating-style bench, you can use 140 x 45mm timber for the seat and support it with heavy-duty galvanised stayed brackets fixed back to the posts or wall. You’ll just need to cut and detail the corner section to wrap neatly around the post. A bit of careful measuring and a jigsaw will sort that out.

If you want something a bit more substantial, you could build a frame out of 90 x 45mm and fix that in place using the same stayed brackets. Then clad the top with decking boards, which gives you a cleaner finish and a bit more flexibility with the corner detail.

With the hanging idea, that’s totally doable in appearance, but it’s important that all the load is properly supported by brackets or framing underneath, not just relying on fixings into the posts.

Either way will work well. It just depends if you want a chunkier framed look or a simpler floating seat.
