Mounting the Altamonte 1200 x 700mm Havana Aluminium Composite Canopy With Plastic Brackets

Question

Hello,

I bought one of these to cover my solar inverter from the sun and rain.

But the space between the bolts on the brackets doesn't line up well with the size of the bricks.

I could get some marine ply, put the canopy on that, and that ply into the bricks, but it doesn't look that good. Are their other metal brackets that might work?

After buying it, I realized I have the bricks with all the holes in them, so I will need something as a better anchor system.

Hi @RobertW,

Unfortunately, there is no alternative bracket that will work with that awning, so if you are going to mount it to the brick, then that spacing is the only real option.

If you were to mount it to timber, you would need to use fairly thick timber such as a 90x45 to ensure the screws get solid embedment into the timber, which would obviously mean the awning sits at least 45mm proud of the wall, which won't look great.

In this situation, my suggestion would be to mount it directly to the brick, spacing the holes as evenly as possible, then use a diamond core bit as opposed to a masonry bit, and do not use the hammer function on your drill. It will take longer, but the likelihood of cracking the brick is greatly reduced.

If you use this, then the Ramset system I mentioned above is still your best option for mounting considering the hollow nature of your bricks.

The the bolts with either be in the extreme top or the extreme bottom of the brick or in the brick mortar, no matter where it's placed.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

When you say they don't line up well with the size of the bricks, can you elaborate a bit on this?

Is the issue that the two fixings per bracket would not fit on a single brick? Or is the issue something different?

If that is the case, could you not just have the brackets span over the mortar joint with a fixing in two separate bricks per bracket?

If you have some photos to show the issue, that would certainly help us to better understand the issue.

As you have hollow bricks, my suggestion would be to use the Ramset system shown in the below video.

to overcome the issue of the hollow brick. The Ultrafix and Multifit Sieve work together to create a strong hold inside the cavity of the brick and the anchor stud attaches to the multifit sieve and the bracket of your awning to lock it in place.
