How to remove shower fan?

Hi, my shower fan seems to be on its way out and I want to replace it.

When I pull it, it's clearly sprung, and will only come less than a cm away from the ceiling before I meet strong resistance. I don't want to pull the ceiling down by yanking on it hard! Any advice please on how to safely remove it? Thanks folks
