How to install a roller door on carport?

hi there, I have a carport which doesn’t lock up so was looking for different options to keep anything that is inside safe and secure. Am I able to install a roller door? Does anyone have any other (reasonable affordable) ideas to make it a lockable space? Thanks!

The materials for your gate depend greatly on its design. If you are building it from scratch the fence or gate can be built using timber. There is also the option of using a steel frame and the front is covered with timber paling or timber of your choice. There are also pre-maid timber fences that you can use. How simple or complex the gate will be will depend on your design.

I propose drawing on paper how you would like to assemble your gate. Just keep in mind that weight is a critical factor as it will put lot of strain on the mounting posts. But at the same time, you want a fair bit of strength so that it is not easily broken.

thanks @MitchellMc that makes sense about the weight of the roller door. In terms of the double sliding doors, posts and whatever else is needed in that illustration you have provided, are these all things I can purchase from Bunnings? And if so do you have any links to the products so I can weigh up cost. Thanks :)

Hi @alexreed092,

You could install a roller door on that carport, but it’s not as simple as attaching one directly to what’s there. The structure you have is more like a lean-to or pergola, and the roof framing isn’t designed to carry the weight or stress of a roller door mechanism. To do it properly, you’d first need to build a solid structural frame at the front, typically with two sturdy posts and a strong head beam (lintel) to support the roller door drum and guides. By the time you factor that in, it can become a fairly involved and costly project.

A more practical and affordable option would be to install double swing gates at the front. This only requires adding posts on either side of the opening and hanging two gate panels that meet in the middle, with a latch or pad bolt for security. It avoids putting any load on the existing roof and is much more DIY-friendly. As shown in the mock-up, the two gates would swing open from the centre, giving you full access when needed while still allowing you to lock the space securely.
