We don't know what's causing it, or how to turn the air conditioner off.

That definitely sounds concerning, especially if the unit is making noise while switched off.
Unfortunately, issues like this are usually internal (such as a fan, motor, or electrical component). For safety reasons, it’s best not to try and open or tamper with the unit.
I’d recommend contacting a licensed air conditioning technician to inspect it. If the unit is still under warranty, it’s also worth reaching out to the manufacturer directly, as they may be able to organise a service or advise on next steps. Alternatively, you could have an electrician safely isolate the unit until you can have it serviced.
