How to fix a rusty basin?

Appreciate some advice. The basin is probably 35 years old. I tried to touch it up with some nail polish but it is getting worse. Reluctant to replace the basin as that would probably trigger having to change another one,and then I am worried that it won’t cover the current cut out and some of the bench top previously covered may be visible and of a different colour due to fading.

Generally speaking, if the shell structure of the basin has been compromised, I suggest replacing it rather than trying to repair it. But if the body and structure are still intact even after sanding it down then it will be possible to repair it. Please have a look at the discussion as my recommendations for repair are applicable to your current situation.
