How to paint sand-finished rendered alfresco wall?

Hi Bunnings Community,

I’m looking for some guidance on the best painting products and a step‑by‑step process along with the quantity to paint my new sand‑finish render in the alfresco area, as well as a section of wall that’s exposed to weather.

I want to make sure I choose the right primer, sealer, and topcoat so the finish lasts and doesn’t peel or fade over time. Any recommendations on specific products available at Bunnings would be really helpful.

I recommend waiting for a minimum of six weeks to allow the render to cure properly and let all the moisture in the wall to get out. However, should you experience a spot of rain, I recommend adding a few extra days just to make sure that the wall is totally dry and is not damp from the rain. My best advice before you apply the primer is to sweep the walls free of sanding dust and debris.

When the wall is totally clean you can then begin to apply the primer. I suggest looking at using https://www.bunnings.com.au/dulux-4l-1step-prep-primer-sealer-undercoat_p1370234 . It can be used for exterior use and features mould and mildew resistant properties. For the topcoat, I recommend https://www.bunnings.com.au/dulux-4l-vivid-white-low-sheen-weathershield-exterior-paint-4l_p0144763 . These paint systems have some of the best reviews which is one reason I recommend using them.

Generally speaking, the steps are to clean the wall as best as possible to remove and dust and debris. If the surface is very sandy washing the surface and scrubbing it with a bristle broom is also an option. It's important that the wall is totally dry before you begin painting. I recommend purchasing the best nap roller your budget can afford for a superior finish. Make sure to give each coat enough time to properly cure before applying the next coat.
