Hiya,
Looking for some advice for a beginner wanting to tile back steps. I want to do simple tile or possibly mosaic style over the current wooden steps. Sometimes area is affected by rain so want to make sure not slippery.
Cheers

Hello @FMaree
Thank you for sharing your question about tiling over your timber steps. I propose looking at using https://www.bunnings.com.au/james-hardie-2700-x-600-x-19mm-hardie-secura-flooring-sheet_p0851522 . It is a durable, yet lightweight structural flooring suited to both indoor and outdoor applications and can be installed over timber or steel floor joists. The moisture-resistant surface sealer removes the need for full floor waterproofing outside enclosed shower areas. Also, unlike plywood or particle board, you can tile directly onto it without the need for underlay, helping to avoid noticeable height differences from one floor finish to the next.
In regards to the tiles, I suggest making sure that they are rated for outside use, and it can be used for flooring. But there is always the option of adding stair treads and anti-slip tape. Before you begin, I suggest checking out your local council's rules and regulations in regards to building your timber steps and covering it with tiles.
Let me call on our experienced members @Nailbag and @Dave-1 for their recommendations.

Hi @FMaree
I think you be fine simply using a Blue-board product if you seal the grout. This single sheet will be plenty to cover those steps.
One issue that I can see it your fly-screen door doesnt have enough clearance to add the height of underlay, adhesive and tiles. You will need around 25mm in total allowing 5mm gap between the top of the tile and the bottom of the door. You won't be able to lift the door height, so your only solution unfortunately is to drop the height of the first tread.

Good evening @FMaree
I havnt had a lot of experience tiling so will bow out. The one thing I did notice @Nailbag beat me to the question :) Your screen door will nee to be shortened to allow for the height of the board, mud and tiles.
