Best paint finish and rollers for colour drenching?

Hi all,

I’m planning a full colour drench of our new apartment to return to neutral canvas using Taubmans South Pole and wanted to confirm I’m using the right finishes.

Questions:

1. Would you recommend low sheen or matt for walls?
2. Is flat still best for ceilings, or better to match wall finish?
3. Satin vs semi-gloss for doors and trim which gives the best result without too much contrast?

In my experience a low sheen finish is easier to maintain when compared to a matt finish. A matt finish is quick to grab dust and stains and is difficult to clean. A flat or matt finish is better for ceilings as it hides imperfections, reduces glare, and creates a smooth, uniform appearance. The non-reflective surface disguises bumps, patches, and roller marks, which is ideal since ceiling lighting often accentuates flaws.

For a more modern and refined look on doors and trim, satin is often the preferred choice. While semi-gloss has long been the go-to for its durability, satin provides a softer, more subtle finish that feels less harsh on the eye. It pairs beautifully with today’s popular matte or eggshell wall finishes, creating a cohesive look without the noticeable shine or glare that can sometimes come with semi-gloss.
