Hello very helpful community, I’d like to build/ install a screen in this space. Any ideas or advice? Would prefer a timber screen . thank you in advance.
Hi @A1821801,
You’ve actually got a really good setup there already. The brick wall does most of the work, you just need to extend the height visually.
A simple and effective way to do a timber screen in that space would be:
Start by installing a single 90 x 45mm timber beam across the top. Run it from the top of the brickwork on the left-hand side across to the wall on the right, fixing it in place with sturdy angle brackets into the bricks.
That beam becomes your top mounting point, and it’ll sit high enough to screen off most of the open area above the wall without interfering with the roof.
Once that’s in place, you’ve essentially created a frame to work off. From there you can:
This approach keeps it:
If you want a more premium look, you could swap lattice for horizontal timber slats instead, but the same top beam concept still applies. I've created an AI-rendering as an example.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
Mitchell,
Thank you so much. It’s beautiful and I think/ hope doable.
Enjoy the day.
I’m off to Bunnings.
warm regards Audrey
if I didn’t use lattice, which timber would I use to create the screen? I’m concerned the lattice may warp.
Also my neighbour is wondering if they could screen from their side. Would they just create the same screening structure and attach to the same beam?
Which angle brackets would you suggest for the weight?
thanks again
Mitchell, I hope this doesn’t sound rude, but are you a person or AI?
The lattice will not warp if it is fixed securely @A1821801. That's why we are installing the top mounting timber. If you didn't, the top might sag or warp. I installed some of our budget lattice seven years ago, and it hasn't warped at all. Another option could be to just mount a https://www.bunnings.com.au/specrite-1800-x-902mm-pre-oiled-merbau-alternating-slat-fence-panel_p8500281 or https://www.bunnings.com.au/specrite-1833-x-900mm-pre-oiled-merbau-horizontal-slat-gate_p8500232 horizontall across the gap. One on your side and one on the neighbours would look great. Alternatively, you could construct your own using https://www.bunnings.com.au/42-x-19mm-2-7m-merbau-pre-oiled-solid-screening_p0517078 .
For both the neighbour and yourself to attach lattice or slats, you would both need the top mounting timber flush with your side of the wall. The walls obviously has a thickness to it, and 90 x 45mm likely isn't large enough for you both to attach to. You might need to double it up. I'd go with https://www.bunnings.com.au/carinya-40-x-40-x-40-x-2mm-galvanised-reinforcing-angle-bracket-8-pack_p3962401 and attach them to the brick at either end with https://www.bunnings.com.au/ramset-6-x-50mm-galvanised-ankascrew-masonry-anchor-10-pack_p2260325 . The timber can then be placed on top and you'd screw up through the bracket into the bottom of it with https://www.bunnings.com.au/zenith-12g-x-50mm-galvanised-hex-head-timber-screws-10-pack_p2420367 .
I’ll take the AI suspicion as a compliment, I must be doing something right! 😁
But I can confirm I’m very much a real person. I’ve spent 19 years working in a Bunnings store, and the past 5 years helping out our awesome community on the Bunnings Workshop. Mitchell
Thank you so much Mitchell and I so pleased you are a human and a very helpful and knowledgeable one.
The width of the screen needs to be around 3m. I can’t locate a lattice that wide. What would you suggest? thank you
Hello @A1821801
In order to cover the 3m width, I propose using a 1.8-meter-wide lattice and cutting it down to 1.5m. I then suggest using another lattice at the same length and joining them together. The lattice can be joined together using a https://www.bunnings.com.au/90-x-19mm-5-7m-merbau-joined-set-length-pre-oiled-decking_p0177416 or an H3 treated piece of pine. This all depends on the type of lattice you are using. My best advice is to use the https://www.bunnings.com.au/zenith-12g-x-50mm-galvanised-hex-head-timber-screws-10-pack_p2420367 as suggested by Mitchell.
