What can we install around above-ground pool?

Question

Have above ground pool put up this summer late we are pulling it down to put up again next summer & do it properly. We will be leveling ground put a sand base cover with black plastic, our problem is we are not sure what we can put around the pool as will be getting rid of lawn, were thinking a peeble edging but not sure if this would work ( might pearce pool lining) Could you recommend an edging not wanting to do decking.

You’re right to be cautious with pebbles. While they can look nice, they’re not always the best choice right up against an above-ground pool as they can shift underfoot and, as you mentioned, there’s a risk of sharp edges damaging the liner over time.

A really practical option is to create a soft buffer zone directly around the pool, then use your decorative finish beyond that. For example, you could run a border of pavers or concrete stepping stones around the pool edge. This gives you a stable, flat surface to walk on and helps protect the liner. Just make sure they’re level with the ground and not pressing into the pool wall.

If you like the look of pebbles, you can still use them, just keep them outside a defined edging like plastic or metal garden edging so they don’t migrate toward the pool. That way you get the aesthetic without the risk.

You might also consider synthetic turf, which is soft underfoot, drains well, and keeps things tidy without the mud you’d get from natural lawn around a pool.

Whatever option you go with, the key is keeping the immediate area around the pool smooth, stable, and free from anything sharp or mobile. If you can, leave a small gap between the pool wall and any hard edging so there’s no rubbing or pressure on the liner.

One other really important thing to keep in mind is pool fencing and safety regulations. Requirements can vary depending on your area and the type/height of the pool, so it’s a good idea to have a quick chat with your local council to make sure everything you’re planning complies before you set it up.
