Hi braintrust, I was wondering how can I install a transition piece between the new hybrid vinyl floor and cupboard. I think I need something to cover the gap.
Hi @charlie0123,
With hybrid flooring, you’ll always need to allow for an expansion gap around the perimeter, including where it meets things like cupboards or built-in joinery. That gap is important because the floor will naturally expand and contract with temperature changes, so it shouldn’t be filled rigidly.
To cover it, you’d typically use some kind of transition or cover strip, but the exact type depends on the height difference between the hybrid floor and whatever it’s meeting. If the heights are similar, a flat cover strip works fine; if there’s a step up or down, you may need a reducer-style trim. It really comes down to where the finished height of your hybrid flooring sits relative to that timber edge.
That said, it might be worth taking a step back and considering a cleaner option: removing that timber trim and continuing the hybrid flooring into the cupboard. That way you get a seamless look, no awkward transition piece, and you also protect the cupboard floor rather than leaving it exposed. It’s often the neater and more durable solution if you’re open to a slightly bigger job.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
