How to treat plants with burnt leaves?

Hi everyone,

Me again with 4 plants that need some love and care before winter hits us.

The firs one is my magnolia that, although looking good, has presented some brown l;eaves from time to time and some broken leaves as if they had been eaten. I have a water measurer in the pot, so I don't believe it is that issue. Photos below

My second plant is our lemon tree that is very high and full of fruit, but leaves have so many white spots…is this because of heat and water on the leaves or some fungus? Photos below

This lemon tree was in the house when we moved, it is the only one planted in a small garden and, being the only real dirt in the back yard, it is also my cat's toilet!! Not sure it has anything to do with the issues…

My third plant is a palm tree, also in the house when we moved, in a pot, on a corner where it gets everything, sun, wind, shade and rain. It had lots of new growth, but recently I saw the new growth is dead. The tips are all burned, so wondering how I can help it from now on. Photos below

And last but not least, a kind of succulent, sorry I don't know the name, which was also in the house when we moved. It is in the back yard, in a covered area, can get a bit of sun in the morning, but mostly it is a partially shaded area. Leaves are looking sick, but there is new growth coming. Photos below

You’ve got a few different things going on here, but the good news is none of it looks beyond recovery.

For your lemon tree, those pale, blotchy patches and distorted areas on the leaves are very typical of leaf miner activity. It’s quite common, especially on new growth, and while it looks a bit rough it usually doesn’t threaten the tree long term. The best approach is to protect the new flushes of growth rather than worrying about the older leaves. A light application of horticultural oil or a citrus-specific spray when you see fresh soft leaves coming through will help prevent further damage. The cat using the garden bed can contribute to stress over time, mainly through repeated disturbance and nitrogen spikes, so if you can discourage that with mulch or a barrier, it will help the tree settle.

For the palm, the blackened tips and dieback on the newer fronds point to environmental stress rather than a pest. Being in a pot and exposed to sun, wind and inconsistent moisture can cause exactly this kind of tip burn. It’s often a mix of drying out, salt build-up in the potting mix, and wind scorch. Giving the pot a thorough flush with water to wash out salts, then keeping watering more consistent, will help. If possible, a slightly more sheltered position out of strong wind will make a noticeable difference, and trimming off the worst of the dead tips will tidy it up while new growth establishes.

For your magnolia, the browning from the tips and occasional leaf damage looks like a combination of minor stress and possibly a bit of insect nibbling. In pots, magnolias can react to fluctuations in moisture or heat, especially with afternoon sun. Even with a water meter, the top layer can dry quickly, and roots can still experience stress. Keeping the moisture even rather than cycling between wet and dry, and maintaining a good mulch layer, will help stabilise things. The odd damaged leaf isn’t a concern, and as the weather cools you should see cleaner growth.

For the succulent, tip burn in a partly shaded, covered area is usually linked to inconsistent watering or slight overwatering rather than sunburn. Succulents prefer to dry out properly between drinks, and if they stay a bit too damp, the leaf tips can blacken and soften. The fact that you’re seeing new growth is a very good sign. Let the soil dry more thoroughly between watering, make sure the pot drains freely, and remove the worst affected leaves to keep it looking fresh.

Overall, your plants are showing signs of stress rather than decline, which is encouraging. With a few small adjustments, they should all head into winter in much better shape.
