How to fix rotting wood in window frame?

Attached are two photos showing rotting wood at the bottom right of a large window frame. There is rotting wood on the bottom left of the door next to the window.

Who would I get to repair the window and door frame ?

Would the whole window and door frame need to be replaced or there an alternative ?

Is there anything thing I can do to temporarily cover the rotten wood from rain ?

In general is there anything you can apply to wood on the bottom of a window or door frame to protect it from water damage ?

This is a common failure point with glazed doors and sidelights. Water is getting into the timber at the bottom corners of the glazing, most likely due to failed sealing or a lack of silicone around the glass. Once moisture gets into that joint, it tends to sit there and the timber begins to rot from the inside out, which is why you’re seeing it in those lower corners.

In this case, the timber has deteriorated to the point where replacement is the right course of action rather than repair. If the rot was only light, there would be options for filling, or splicing in timber, however due to the depth and severity of the rot, the strength of the frame has been greatly reduced to the point where replacement seems like the only viable option.

There isn't really a great deal you can do to protect the sidelight from further rot as it has completely opened up and is exposed. In the case of the door, where it has not completely opened, you could check the corners of the glazing and apply some silicone sealant as well as apply some additional exterior paint to help seal the timber. Realistically though, once rot has started, it will tend to spread unless you completely remove the effected timber.

For replacement, you’d be best to contact a qualified carpenter or a window and door specialist. They will be able to remove the sidelight and replace it and assist with any repairs that the door requires.

To prevent this kind of problem in future, it’s important to keep the glazing well sealed with a good quality exterior silicone and ensure all exposed timber is properly painted or sealed. Regularly checking and maintaining those seals will help stop water from getting into the joints.
