Hey team
I have this weed grass showing in my sir walter buffalo lawn and garden beds(mulch topping)
Best solution? So much for hand removal and it's looking like it's in the lawn now
Hi @amichaelmedia,
Did you try to upload an image with this post?
If you did, could you either try again or send us the image through workshop@bunnings.com.au so we can add it to the post.
Alot of common weeds in buffalo lawns can be managed with https://www.bunnings.com.au/yates-4l-buffalopro-hose-on-lawn-weed-killer-4l_p0137954 , so that could be an option, but it would be best that we see what you are dealing with to ensure you are using the most effective product or method.
Send through some photos when you get a chance, and I’ll help you work out the next steps.

It looks like young couch grass coming through in the bare patches. Unfortunately, there’s no selective herbicide that will take couch out without also damaging the buffalo, so you’ve got a couple of options depending on how bad it is.
For smaller patches, hand removal is your best bet. It will ensure the grass is removed while everything else stays in tact. Try to get as much of the runners and roots out as possible, otherwise it’ll keep coming back.
You can also slow it down by keeping your buffalo as healthy and dense as possible by watering and fertilising regularly and mowing it a bit higher than usual to allow it time to spread into those bare patches.
For garden beds, it’s easier. You can spot spray with a non-selective herbicide such as https://www.bunnings.com.au/ocp-1l-slasher-weedkiller-concentrate-1l_p2962229 , just be careful to avoid any overspray onto the buffalo. Once the grass in the beds has perished, top them up with mulch to help prevent regrowth.
If it really takes over sections of the lawn, which mind you, seems unlikely looking at it, the only proper fix is to dig out, or spot treat those areas and re lay buffalo turf. I don't think you'll get to this point if you address it now, but it is worth noting.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
