How to replace external wooden door frame with metal frame?

Hi All,

I'm looking for some advice around replacing an old rotting wooden door frame with a metal one on the side of a garage. Specifically: I'm after a

few product recommendations as none of the door frames on Bunnings website seem to provide minimum opening size

Its in a position that's exposed to the elements with no cover and the previous wooden one hasn't lasted as long as it should.

The opening is between two brick columns that measure about 230mm deep, and has a rough opening size of 2080 x 880mm (I've allowed about 5mm tolerance on the width and 20mm on the height).

Due to the position of the door it needs to swing inwards into the garage. When standing on the outside of the garage the door handle is on the left, and the hinges are on the right.

There's currently no sill however as water comes in beneath the door I'd like some weatherproofing if possible. Unfortunately the garage roof is only 2100mm high so I'm somewhat limited with overall height.

I already have a Parkwood 2040 x 820 door to install so I'm just after the frame.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

All of the Steel Door Frames on our website seem to be for use with either timber or steel framing and would not be suitable for use in this application.

If you have a look at the Hume Commercial Catalogue, which can be found here - https://humecommercialdoors.com.au/ - you will note that there are a variety of profiles, for a variety of applications including brick and double brick and that frames can be made to whatever size you need.

My suggestion would be to head to your local store's Special Orders desk. The team will be able to get in touch with Hume Commercial for guidance on the best frame for your application, then get a quote and order it for you.

Alternatively, you could reach out to them directly using the email on their website for guidance on the best choice for your specific circumstance. When they've given you a recommendation, the team in store can place an order on your behalf.

If there is currently no sill, then installing something like this https://www.bunnings.com.au/q-assist-19mm-single-sided-aluminium-threshold-plate_p0648141 to the ground, then installing a quality weather seal such as a https://www.bunnings.com.au/raven-rp3-door-bottom-clear-920mm-920mm-clear-anodised_p4065361 would certainly help with weather protection.
