Hi team, how can I remove this damaged pipe and replace it with a new one? It looks like it’s just the one piece that needs a replacement. Any helpful ideas would be much appreciated.
Hi @unhandyhands,
Generally, work on downpipes is considered plumbing work that would require a licence, however as you would just be replacing the pipe like for like, it should be ok as long as you replace it how it was done originally.
You'll have to start by removing the fixings that are holding the pipe bracket in place. This can be done by cutting them with an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel or by hitting it with a hammer and chisel until it deforms and snaps.
Once the bracket is removed, you should be able to lift the downpipe up to remove it from the connection at the bottom, then afterwards from the top.
Our supplier Lysaght make powder coated 100x75mm steel downpipes in Colorbond colours, but they are not kept in store, so you would have to Special Order one. Alternatively, you could purchase a https://www.bunnings.com.au/lysaght-0-4-x-100-x-75mm-x-1-8m-zincalume-downpipe_p4790410 and paint it to match the existing pipe.
When you have a length of replacement downpipe, you can cut it to length using an angle grinder, or with a pair of aviation snips, then slip it back into place. It would then be worthwhile to drill a few holes in the overlap at the top and fix it in place with some pop rivets.
You would then fix the bracket back to the wall using some nylon anchors like these https://www.bunnings.com.au/ramset-5-x-25mm-brick-nylon-anchor-10-pack_p2260321 . As the old anchor would be in place, this would mean moving the bracket slightly and drilling new holes with a 5mm masonry bit.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
