I'm planning to tackle this myself. How should I go about to repaint my window frames as most of them have mould and paint are flaking. What are the prep work and what tools/materials are required? Thanks.
Hi @rach26,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.
I'll start by mentioning that any work around glass can be dangerous and it is important to prioritise your safety when working around glass. Always wear gloves, long protective clothing and enclosed shoes to help mitigate the risk if the glass was to shatter and take your time to ensure no avoidable accidents occur.
First up, deal with the mould properly. Use a dedicated mould cleaner such as https://www.bunnings.com.au/selleys-750ml-rapid-mould-killer-remover_p0059099 . Apply it, let it sit as per the instructions, then wipe or scrub it off. Make sure everything is completely dry before moving on or you’ll trap moisture under the new paint.
Next, remove any loose or flaking paint with a scraper such as this https://www.bunnings.com.au/100mm-sharp-edge-paint-scraper_p1670156 , being very careful not to scratch the glass. Anything that’s not well bonded needs to come off or the new paint won’t last.
After that, give the frames a light sand with some 120-grit sandpaper to smooth the bare timber, remove the last of the flaking paint and roughen the existing paint to help with adhesion. Once sanded, ensure you wipe away all the dust.
Once prepped, tape off the glass and surrounding areas using painter's tape. This will help you get nice clean edges and keep the paint off the glass. Then apply a good quality primer such as https://www.bunnings.com.au/dulux-4l-1step-prep-primer-sealer-undercoat_p1370234 , especially anywhere you’ve exposed bare timber or where the mould was.
When the primer is dry, finish with a durable enamel paint such as Dulux Aquanamel, applying two coats for a nice solid finish.
