How to tile an outdoor step?

Hi community 👋,

I have a new deck which the builder has created a structure for my step with correct cement board. I’m wanting to tile the top and face of the step with non slip small tiles and wanted to know the correct products I’ll need and any tips!

Thank you for sharing your question about tiling your outdoor step.

I suggest having a quick look at this discussion - How to prepare the ground for tiling outdoor area? by @Sugar. My teammate has given a great description on the steps you need to take to prepare the surface for tiling.

The products suggested are the following:

• https://www.bunnings.com.au/dta-10mm-bright-steel-notch-trowel_p6820935 (double check the space of the notch by fitting the tile into the notch of the trowel)

• https://www.bunnings.com.au/dunlop-1-5kg-flexible-coloured-grout-slate-grey_p6829735 (make sure to choose your preferred colour)

The general steps are to place and measure the tiles on the surface to make sure that you have enough tiles and that they are neatly balanced. Next is to clean the surface very well by wiping it with a clean rag. You then apply the surface primer and make sure to follow the applications drying time. Apply the adhesive onto the surface and position the tiles as you planned earlier. Use the tile spacers to make sure that the spacing between the tiles is uniform across the surface. Allow the tile adhesive to fully cure before you apply the grout. Once the grout has cured, I then suggest applying the sealant to protect the surface of the tile and grout.

If you are tiling the face of the step, I suggest asking your builder to install a cement board at the front and side of the step as well.
