How to fix burn marks on stone benchtop?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently renting and accidentally burned a small section of the marble/stone near my gas stove (the heat even burned through foil). The marks look like dark brown/black spots and don’t come off with normal cleaning.

Does anyone know a safe DIY way to fix or improve this, or any products from Bunnings that could help? I don’t want to make it worse since it’s a rental.

Would really appreciate any advice or product recommendations. Thanks so much!

Actually @EricL has a point and really Marble doesn't scorch. So make sure this is actually stone or marble before trying to remove this abrasively.

Sounds stupid but try toothpaste. It is a very mild abrasive and can work, just put some on a cloth and rub it away. if it leaves a dull finish, switch to silver polish as it is even finer and for the ultimate shine (you will have to go to a specialist supply shop) Jewellers Rouge which is used for polishing gem stones. I used to use this over 50 years ago when I refurbished TVs for a living to polish scratches out of glass TV screens.

, please make sure it is wet and to never use it when its dry. You can add a small amount of dish washing soap just to help it out. Please do not use any harsh scrubbers as it will damage the surface finish of the benchtop. Your goal is to slowly eliminate the burn marks and work your way to the centre of the burn. I'm sorry but I don't have any touch up material you can use on your stone surface. The best you can do is to reduce the size of the burn so that it will not be very noticeable.

Please note that if you notice any surface fading while scrubbing then it's possible that you have a laminated surface benchtop, and I would suggest backing off from over cleaning the surface.

Your other option is to engage the services of a benchtop repair professional. They will have the knowledge, experience and materials to repair your benchtop.
