How to plant Heliconia Tropics down side of house?

Hi, I am wanting to plant these Heliconia Tropics down the side of my house, in front of the concrete retaining wall. How should I do this? Is ok to dig the holes and plant them with some potting mix? Or do I need more prep work? Thank you for any advice.

Nice choice. They’ll look great along that wall once established.

I’d avoid planting them straight into holes with just potting mix. In-ground planting is a bit different, and potting mix on its own can actually hold too much moisture or break down unevenly over time.

A better approach would be:

• Dig your holes at least twice the width of the pot, ensuring you do not disturb the post foundations
• Improve the existing soil by mixing through a quality garden soil or compost rather than replacing it entirely
• Make sure the area drains reasonably well (important in a narrow side passage like this)
• Plant them at the same height as they are in the pots, then water in well

Given the gravel base, you’ll likely be digging through to whatever soil is underneath. Just check it’s not overly compacted clay. If it is, breaking it up and adding some organic matter, such as the compost, will really help.

Also, keep in mind Heliconias like warmth, moisture, and protection from wind. This spot looks fairly sheltered, which is great, but being close to walls they can dry out a bit quicker, so regular watering will help them establish.

A light mulch around the base (once planted) will also help retain moisture and improve the soil over time.
