How to salvage my rangehood with broken mount fixings?

Hi there,

I had a bit of a disaster when re-mounting my rangehood yesterday.  I think I must have overtightened the screw because I felt a crack and then the screw suddenly started spinning.  I'm hoping to find a work-around because I can't find a new rangehood with exactly the same dimensions.

I've included a photo of an intact fixing, followed by a broken one.

Someone suggested using a blob of epoxy to replace the broken plastic, then screwing through that.  Does that sound like my best bet, or do you have any alternative suggestions?

Yes, taking a notch out of the shelf would be easily done with a multi-tool @AnnaH1.

Yes it is secured by screwing down through through the cabinet into those mounts.

Once the rangehood is in situ there is no access tighten a nut underneath, but I'm thinking if I can get the bolt to stay in position while I push it up through through the cabinet, I could put the nut on the cabinet side.

If not, the brackets sound like a good plan, but I'd just need to make some holes in the cabinet floor to fit the bracket arms through… would a multi-tool be good for that?

Just to understand it properly, are you fixing the rangehood by screwing down through the cabinet above into those mounts? That’s how most of them are set up.

If so, the epoxy idea isn’t ideal here. It tends to rely on surface grip, and in this situation (weight + vibration), it’s likely to fail over time or crack again.

I’d recommend checking with the manufacturer first to make sure there are no internal components (like wiring or the fan housing) in the way before drilling or changing fixings, and whether it would be safe to do so.

A more reliable option is to bypass the damaged area altogether. If there’s enough access inside the rangehood, you could switch to using a bolt with a washer and nut. That way you’re mechanically clamping the unit in place rather than relying on the plastic section. A large washer will help spread the load and prevent further damage.

Another option, if access is tight, is to support the rangehood with small L-brackets fixed to the cabinet sides or rear panel. This can take the load off those original mounts entirely.

If you’re unsure, a local handyperson could take a quick look and suggest the safest fixing method.
