How to reseal peeling kitchen benchtop?

Hi everyone,

over the last few years of owning our home the benchtop put in by the previous owners has begun to peel in spots just by use and movement. Just wondering what product is the best to re-seal it once I clean and remove the original sealer. Definitely looking for something that is food safe once cured.

You can re‑seal it, but it’s important to fully remove the existing coating first as new sealer won’t bond properly to peeling or worn areas. Scrape back the old finish with a bladed scraper, then clean down thoroughly using something like

to remove residue and oils. Be careful not to damage the benchtop whilst scraping.

Once the surface is clean and dry,

is a good option. It’s suitable for indoor use and commonly used on benchtops, providing a durable, clear protective finish. Just be aware that while it’s fine for benchtop applications once cured, it doesn’t carry a specific food‑safe accreditation, which generally applies to direct food‑preparation surfaces like chopping boards rather than sealed benches. I am not aware of any products suitable for a cement benchtop that carry a food-safe rating.

Remember to wear PPE such as a face mask, safety glasses and gloves when using the solvent cleaner and do a test section first in an inconspicuous location.
