How to tile the top of my TV unit?

Question

I am wanting to tile the top of my build in TV unit with 48x48mm tile sheets and the top surface side profile as well which is about 5cm.

Wondering if I can do this over the top of the existing pink laminate top or if I need to prep it in any way?

Hi @BFraser,

Yes, that approach will work, and referencing a similar project guide is a good idea as it follows the same general method.

Laminate isn’t a great surface for tile adhesive to bond to, so some prep is important. You’ll want to scratch up and key the surface so the adhesive has something to grip to. A thorough sand with 80–120 grit sandpaper is usually enough to dull the finish and create that mechanical bond. Remember you're PPE including a face mask and safety glasses.

Because this is a horizontal surface, you don’t need quite the same level of adhesion strength as you would on a wall, but you still want a decent key so the tiles stay put long term.

For the front edge, I would be inclined to use Liquid Nails to adhere the tiles, as it will likely grip the keyed laminate better than tile adhesive.
