Hi! Hoping for help with preparing soil in my garden bed. I have a small non raised garden bed (pictured) that I have previously struggled to growth plants in (have tried natives like kangaroo paw and non natives like hostas) and nothing has thrived. Before planting again I want to optimise the soil and believe I have a clay component. Top ~30cm appears to be loamy soil, below this point is a layer of what seems to be clay (can form short ribbons when wet). It is very hard at this point and I can't dig by hand any deeper. I did a drainage test and it took water about 1 hour to fully drain.
My questions are:
How can I optimise the soil to mean plants can form a better root system? Gypsum? Just organic matter?
Do I need to be able to dig/till down further than the current 30cm?
With current composition are there certain plants that would work well or to avoid? It is in at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day and I am wanting to plant hardy plants in general with low water needs.
Thanks in advance!
