How to protect Cypress post outdoors?

Hi

We bought a cypress post to install a shower in the garden. We initially thought of using Marbeau stained oil to match the decking. However, the application after sanding leaves a very artificial non natural look. So, my question is double

1. How I remove the stained oil I applied on the post; and
2. What is the best way to protect the post and keep a natural nice look

Cypress can be a bit tricky with tinted oils as it can take the colour unevenly, which is likely why it’s come up looking a bit artificial.

To remove what you’ve applied, you’re going to have to sand it back. Start with a rougher grit such as 80-grit to cut through the oil and then finish finer with some 180-grit to get the timber looking even again. A random orbital sander, , will be a massive help with the removal as unfortunately, it's going to take a fair bit of sanding to remove. If the oil has soaked in deeper in some spots, you might need to spend a bit more time on those areas to get a consistent finish. Remember to wear a mask when sanding as you don't want to be inhaling any of that timber dust.

For a more natural look, you’re better off going with a clear exterior oil such as this https://www.bunnings.com.au/intergrain-4l-clear-nature-s-timber-oil_p0916148 . A clear exterior oil will protect the post while still letting the grain and colour of the cypress come through. Just keep in mind that any oil, even clear, will slightly deepen the colour, but it should look much more natural than a pigmented stain.

Also worth noting, being an outdoor shower, the post will be exposed to a fair bit of moisture, so whatever you use, make sure to plan for occasional reapplication to keep it looking good.
