How to build pergola attaching to 3 walls?

Hi there,

I have a patio area with three surrounding walls, and I’m planning to build a lean-to pergola with two posts at the front, while attaching the back and side beams to the walls.

As shown in the photo, the left wall is brick and has plenty of space to fix a beam directly. My concern is the back wall and the right side wall — most of these areas are weatherboard, and they’re not flush with the brick wall (there’s about a 100mm gap).

What would be the best way to build a pergola in this situation?

So far I’ve thought of a few options:

• Use fascia brackets and avoid fixing to the wall, but that would make the pergola quite high and a bit harder to build
• Build it as a fully freestanding structure with 4 posts, but one corner has a downpipe, so installing a post there isn’t very practical
• Fix the beam to the wall using spacer blocks to bridge the 100mm gap

First thing to do is check with your local council about permits. Structures like pergolas often require approval, and if they do, you’ll typically need plans that comply with building codes. That’s important here because once you’re attaching to a house, especially multiple walls, the fixing method becomes a structural issue, not just a DIY detail.

Even though your setup has three walls, the same principles apply as a standard attached pergola: you can’t rely on cladding (like weatherboards) or brick veneer alone for support. In most cases, you’re not permitted to fix structural loads to brick veneer, because it’s just a skin. The actual strength is in the framing behind it.

For your situation:

• The brick wall may be veneer, so it likely isn’t suitable for direct structural fixing unless you’re anchoring into the structural frame behind it.
• The weatherboard walls definitely won’t carry load on their own, and using spacer blocks to bridge a 100mm gap won’t solve that problem unless you’re fixing back to solid framing.

What typically needs to happen is:

• Fix your pergola beams back to structural timber (studs, top plates, or roof framing), not the outer surface.
• This often means removing sections of cladding to install proper brackets or ledgers directly to the frame.
• In some cases, connections are made into the roof structure (rafters/trusses), depending on design.

If that’s not practical, then a freestanding pergola (even if it means working around the downpipe) is often the simpler and safer route.

Given the 100mm offset and mixed wall types, this is one of those builds where an engineered solution or at least some professional guidance is strongly recommended. It’ll ensure the load paths are correct and keep everything compliant.
