How to build a patio screen?

Folks,

Recently finished building a Stratco 7x4.6m patio and I am keen to infill the far side (bbq area) to protect items from the elements.

Intention was to build a stud frame to enclose that side (inc to the brick wall) with fibre cement (or similar for the size facing the weather whilst the inside face will be a timber composite of sorts for effect.

Any recommendations on material for waterproofing the outer side? If fibre cement or similar, are there any recommendations on an ready to install flashing or the like between the board and patio/slab/brick wall?

Once you start enclosing a patio system, it changes how the structure behaves, particularly in terms of wind loading and how forces move through the frame. Even a single infill wall can affect the original engineering design, so before going ahead, it’s important to check with the manufacturer or installer to confirm what modifications are acceptable for your specific setup.

In general terms, your idea of using a stud frame with a fibre cement sheet is a common approach for this type of project. Fibre cement works well as a weather-facing material because it’s durable and moisture-resistant, but it isn’t fully waterproof on its own, so it should be installed as part of a system. Typically, this includes a sarking behind the sheeting, proper sealing and painting on the exterior face, and well-detailed flashings at all junctions to prevent water ingress.

For waterproofing details, you’d normally include flashing at the base to keep the sheet slightly clear of the slab and prevent moisture wicking, vertical flashing where the new wall meets the brickwork (sealed appropriately), and a head or Z-flashing at the top where it meets the patio structure to direct water away.

It’s also worth allowing for drainage and ventilation by not sealing everything completely airtight, and by using suitable exterior-grade sealants like polyurethane. Internally, if you’re lining with a timber or composite finish, adding battens to create a small cavity can help with moisture control and improve durability.

Overall, the method is sound in principle, but because it alters the original structure, getting confirmation from the manufacturer or an engineer is the safest way to ensure compliance and long-term performance.
