Queensland couple Charmaine and Adam Wood started their D.I.Y. journey young after buying their first home at just 23.
“We had a strong desire to undertake projects in our first home to make it feel more personal and welcoming, but we simply lacked the funds to hire tradespeople,” says Charmaine. “This experience sparked our love for D.I.Y.”
Known as @Acewoodhome on Bunnings Workshop, the couple wowed the community when they shared their kitchen makeover, transforming dark brown cabinetry and creating a room that feels warmer and much better suited to everyday family life.
Rather than changing the layout, Charmaine and Adam focused on the elements that would have the biggest impact. They kept what was still working, then layered in the earthy green cabinetry, shaker-style fronts, a more substantial island, hybrid flooring and brass details.
Charmaine says it was “the little details” that helped bring the whole room together.
The renovation also reflects the practical, hands-on spirit that defines so many Workshop projects. The couple completed most of the makeover themselves across weekends and after hours, combining Charmaine’s eye for design with Adam’s skills in budgeting, woodwork and power tools.
The finished kitchen now feels, in Charmaine’s words, “warm, inviting and exactly what we had envisioned." "I love how everything came together – the colours, textures and finishes. And what I love the most is how it feels to be in this kitchen. We are so proud of what we achieved."
The couple have also shared their butler’s pantry makeover and upcycled bedside table. The projects show how to balance creativity with practicality and know how to make a home feel more personal, functional and lived in.
