How to install a strike and hole deadbolt in hollow metal frame?

Hi there,

I just moved to a new house, and when measuring for a deadlock, I noticed the door frame is metal and hollow.

I have done small projects before, including installing a door lock, but I have no clue how to do this right.

Can someone point me to:

* How to make the deadlock hole
* How to screw the strike into the metal frame. I noticed the strike has a plastic part that holds it in place, with additional screws (see photos).
* Do I need to but an special strike? If so, what is the name?
* What tool do I need?

I like the idea of the metal frame kit, but unsure if my skills are good enough for it.

I may reach to an specialist and see what they come with.

I have a Dremel and I am ok with it but this looks that requires skills to don't mess it up or just will look ugly.

I've replaced several fire rated rear garage door handle sets which are always extremely challenging. Typically because everything is rusting out and non-standard.

I have only replaced two in aluminium frames like yours but had them both professionally installed. Originally the cut outs are done with a CNC machine at manufacture. To do this post is extremely difficult if your as fussy as I am to have just as neat a fitment.

If your going to have a crack yourself, then with the money you save, invest in a Dremel (not a copy) as it has very fine metal cutting accessories to give you the best chance of a neat professional finish. I bought one, and though barely used, it comes in handy for the most obscure projects like my multi-tool which is an awesome investment.

Working with a hollow metal door frame is a bit different from timber, so it’s good you checked first. To make the hole for the deadbolt, you’ll need to cut the metal. Start by carefully marking the position using the template that comes with the lock. Drill pilot holes at the corners, then use a metal hole saw or a jigsaw with a metal-cutting blade to open it up. Once cut, smooth the edges with a file so the bolt can move cleanly without catching.

The correct approach is to use a purpose-built metal frame strike kit like the Lockwood NX8 Nexion Metal Frame Strike Kit which we can Special Order for you. These kits are specifically designed for hollow steel frames and include a proper metal strike box and fixing system, which gives the strength that a regular strike and screws simply can’t provide.

Instead of relying on the thin outer metal of the frame, the kit works by inserting a reinforced strike box inside the hollow section. The strike plate then fixes into this assembly using the supplied machine screws, creating a much more secure and professional installation.

Installation is also more straightforward with the right hardware: you cut the opening in the metal frame to suit the strike box, insert the box into the cavity, and then secure the strike plate using the provided fixings.
