How to level plaster ceiling?

I'm doing a bathroom reno and the old ceiling timbers are quite uneven. There is up to 3cm drop over the ceiling as well. I think I can use a metal hanging rail to create a new flat surface for the new plaster. Which product would you recommend? Brackets + rails + screws?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

In this situation, the easiest method of levelling your ceiling is to use https://www.bunnings.com.au/siniat-18-x-6000mm-0-42bmt-furring-channel_p1091120 which would be attached to the existing framing via https://www.bunnings.com.au/siniat-80mm-direct-fix-furring-channel-clip-drop_p1091133 . The clips would be screwed to the side of the existing framing using screws such as these https://www.bunnings.com.au/zenith-8g-x-30mm-galvanised-button-head-stitching-timber-screws-100-pack_p2420714 ensuring there is two in every clip used.

To adjust the height, you would simply screw the clips in, so the bottom of the clip is level with the bottom of all the other clips. In physicality, this would mean the clips protrude further beneath the highest framing than they would the lowest framing.

Hi @p8128,

Yes, that ceiling track would work perfectly with the 18mm furring channel.

You can use those same screws to screw the track to the walls, then use some of these https://www.bunnings.com.au/buildex-8g-x-12mm-class-3-sheet-metal-screws-button-head-100-pack_p0920232 to fix the furring channel to your wall track.

Thanks these things worked great! I'm now looking for recommendations on the plasterboard and screws. Its for a bathroom so should I use a particular type of plasterboard? Also what screws will screw the plaster into the metal furring channels correctly? I'm assuming normal plasterboard screws would not work?

You can use 10mm plasterboard or potentially consider 13mm if your joists are further apart (600mm centres). You'll be using https://www.bunnings.com.au/titan-6g-x-25mm-plasterboard-screw-100-pack_p0912023 to attach the plasterboard to the Siniat furring channel. These screws are suitable for thin metal up to 1.0mm.

Should I use the aquachek plasterboard or is regular plasterboard fine?

Both materials can be used for ceiling linings, however Gyprock Aquachek is specifically designed for walls and ceilings in wet areas such as bathrooms, ensuites, and laundries. Its moisture-resistant core and face paper help prevent sagging and deterioration caused by high humidity, making it a more suitable option for bathroom ceilings.

I recommend using Gyprock Aquachek, as it will provide improved moisture resistance, durability, and long-term performance in the bathroom environment.

For extra protection I recommend using https://www.bunnings.com.au/crommelin-1l-flat-aquablock-waterproof-primer-undercoat_p1560469 and your choice of ceiling paint.
